Cheat Codes is a solo gallery exhibition of new monoprints and video art by Stephen Wilson at Box 13 in Houston, Texas.
About the Show:
In 1945, Richard Wright’s memoir, Black Boy, depicted the author’s life as a black boy in the Jim Crow South.
The author describes the awkward oscillation towards artistic self discovery from leaving his home in the Southern United States for Chicago in the North. Cheat Codes will be a continuation of the struggle for artistic self discovery as described by Wright in his novel. The primary focus of the exhibition is to give the viewer an atmosphere of the black body in an age of splash pages and attention deficiency. Cheat Codes will question the possibility of understanding blackness better in a world with access to unlimited information, and how fictional, discriminatory generalizations can have real, often violent consequences.
